Botanical Medicine
Botanical (herbal) medicine is one of the foundational pillars of Mederi Care®, and botanicals are central to many of our personalized treatment protocols. We honor the rich traditions of herbal medicine while integrating current scientific research that continues to expand our understanding of how medicinal plants support health at the molecular, cellular, and systems levels.
Plants contain complex arrays of naturally occurring compounds that work synergistically, often influencing multiple biological pathways at once. Guided by the principle that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, we thoughtfully combine whole herbs, standardized extracts, concentrated extracts, and select botanical constituents to create individualized formulas tailored to each person's constitution, health concerns, and therapeutic goals.
Drawing from traditions including American Eclectic, Physiomedical, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Ayurveda, our practitioners use botanical medicine to promote resilience, restore balance, and support the body's innate capacity for healing.
Botanical Medicine in Mederi Care
Every botanical protocol is personalized to the individual. Based on your health history, constitution, symptoms, laboratory findings, and treatment goals, our practitioners will recommend herbal formulas that may include:
- Adaptogens to strengthen resilience and the body's response to stress
- Herbal tonics to restore vitality and stamina
- Immunomodulators to support healthy immune function
- Detoxification and lymphatic herbs to support healthy elimination
- Botanicals selected to help inhibit tumor growth and proliferation
- Nervines to calm the nervous system and support emotional well-being
- Additional herbs chosen to address symptoms and support each person's unique constitution
We combine custom herbal formulas with targeted nutritional therapies, dietary recommendations, and high-quality supplements to create a comprehensive, personalized treatment plan.
Botanical Medicine in Modern Research
A growing body of scientific research continues to demonstrate the broad and multi-targeted effects of botanical medicines across numerous biological systems. Rather than acting on a single pathway, many botanical compounds influence multiple processes simultaneously, making them well suited to complex conditions such as cancer and chronic illness.
Modern research shows that botanical compounds can:
- Down-regulate genes involved in cancer development
- Act at the mutational, intercellular, receptor, and extracellular levels
- Promote apoptosis (cell death) in cancer cells while protecting healthy ones
- Alter the microenvironment to favor health over disease
- Inhibit resistance to chemotherapy and radiation
- Support detoxification, immune function, and overall resilience
- Enhance the effectiveness of chemotherapy while reducing its side effects
- Protect vital organs and bone marrow
- Strengthen immune surveillance and natural killer cell activity
- Regulate inflammation, improve stress response, and support detox pathways
- Support healing of secondary health concerns such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, insomnia, depression, pain, digestive distress, and the effects of cancer treatments on hair and skin
- Offer pleiotropic effects: doing many beneficial things at once, safely and naturally
Botanical medicines work in harmony with the body’s biology, engaging multiple pathways at the same time to support regulation, repair, and resilience. Because humans have co-evolved with plant compounds over time, these substances are often well-recognized and well-tolerated by the body. Rather than simply opposing disease, botanical medicine helps restore balance—supporting the body’s innate capacity to heal, adapt, and thrive.
Plant Medicine Podcast with Donnie Yance
To learn more about the use of botanical medicine in Mederi Care®, listen to this podcast in which Mederi Center® Founder and Lead Clinican Donnie Yance talks about plant-based treatments with a focus on cancer management. He explains how botanical medicine can work together with traditional cancer treatments for more effective care, combating issues such as drug resistance and nutritional deficits.
In the podcast, Donnie also talks about how he works with cancer patients and their doctors utilizing the unique, evidence-based integrative approach he developed called Mederi Care® (also known as Eclectic Triphasic Medical System or ETMS). This approach focuses on the health of the patient using plant medicine to strengthen their healing capacity; assessing and altering accordingly the patient's micro environment and how it relates to the disease; and targeting the cancer after identifying its molecular characteristics. Ultimately, our therapeutic goal is to apply a medicinal approach that does the most harm to the unhealthy cells with the least harm to the body's healthy cells.
